Sundhedsstyrelsen (Danish National Board of Health (NBH))

SNOMED CT® with it’s more than 380.000 concepts, 900.000 terms and 1400.000 relationships, was found to be the most comprehensive and detailed terminology. The poly hierarchy and the possibilities for selecting different levels of granularity were seen as an advantage. The reference model for SNOMED CT® was considered robust and offered an evolutionary development, handling of multilingual use and language extensions. For this reason NBH has decided to and is now in the midst of translating the entire human medical domain of SNOMED CT®.
It has also been considered important ensuring that the terminology is adjusted to Danish conditions and that professionals, as well as patients and relatives can understand the terminology used. SNOMED CT® is today translated into Spanish and German as well as GB-English.
The aim is that the Danish translation will support clinical documentation in the EHR and use these entries as a basis for secondary use of data, including cross disciplinary communication. Furthermore this need for a granular terminology has to be counterbalanced with the need to produce the terminology within a short timeframe.

Socialstyrelsen (Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare)

Socialstyrelsen in Stockholm, Sweden is using HealthTerm® as their main IT vehicle in their SNOMED CT® translation project. HealthTerm® is used by all involved parties in Socialstyrelsen as well as their external translation bureau partners.
In the near future the Swedes are planning to evaluate an extended use of HealthTerm® in the process of creating specific subsets to be tested and validated by e.g. health professionals. International mapping exercises are being planned for which HealthTerm® is one of the supporting tools to be evaluated.
